Formative Evaluation
Please post comments of your feedback about the Number Systems materials. Feel free to comment on the individual "chunks" on their post entry. Answer the following questions here:
1) Does the overall visual presentation, design, and color scheme seem appropriate? Why or why not?
2) Is the topic well introduced? Is there prerequisite knowledge that is not addressed?
3) Would you like to see the topics sequenced differently? If so, how?
4) How is the pace? Be specific.
5) Are the component topics thoroughly explained? If not, which topics need more attention?
6) Are any concepts explanations overly verbose or poorly done? If so, which ones and how could it be better?
7) Are new terms adequately defined?
8) Are there any technical or grammatical errors?
9) How do you feel about the podcast delivery medium? What if there was low background music?
10) Is there anything you’d like to add?

1) Does the overall visual presentation, design, and color scheme seem appropriate? Why or why not?
Yes, adaptively speaking, the colors contrast and the diagrams are easy to see.
2) Is the topic well introduced? Is there prerequisite knowledge that is not addressed?
Yes, the review of our base 10 system and natural numbers is a sufficient introduction.
3) Would you like to see the topics sequenced differently? If so, how?
The sequence made sense to me.
4) How is the pace? Be specific.
The pace of the audio is good, and the pace of the instruction is perfect for the amound of "mind wrapping" that's happening. The pace of the "artwork" is good too, but it's a little slow. Although if there were more action you might lose someone.
5) Are the component topics thoroughly explained? If not, which topics need more attention?
A little more explanation on the hex part. You had me, but I needed just a tiny bit more to seal the deal. Another minute of graphics maybe.
6) Are any concepts explanations overly verbose or poorly done? If so, which ones and how could it be better?
Not really, I thought it was pretty concise with the artwork.
7) Are new terms adequately defined?
YES
8) Are there any technical or grammatical errors?
A few which I noted in other posts, but that was regarding the web site text. I did not see any errors in the podcast.
Being new to podcasts, it took me a while to figure out how to view the artwork and enlarge it. Once I figured it out, it was great.
9) How do you feel about the podcast delivery medium? What if there was low background music?
No background music. It would be too hard to concentrate.
10) Is there anything you’d like to add?
Nicely done. The instruction was very clear. I guess I should take Mikki's network classes.

1) Does the overall visual presentation, design, and color scheme seem appropriate? Why or why not?
Yes, my attention was kept focused on the issue.
2) Is the topic well introduced? Is there prerequisite knowledge that is not addressed?
Yep, new material was framed by a brief review of more common positional systems, keying into something familiar to most of the target learners.
3) Would you like to see the topics sequenced differently? If so, how?
No, the sequence was fine.
4) How is the pace? Be specific.
The pace is even. It's not an easy topic to grasp, so it's good that the pacing was graduated. One thing that helped was the variation and expression in vocal tone, which reinforced the meaning of what was being said.
5) Are the component topics thoroughly explained? If not, which topics need more attention?
Yes, explanation was thurough.
6) Are any concepts explanations overly verbose or poorly done? If so, which ones and how could it be better?
All concepts were well explained, I appreciated some repetition, since in verbal delivery we need some redundancy.
7) Are new terms adequately defined?
Yes and seeing the term visually helped reinforce the term form me.
8) Are there any technical or grammatical errors?
None that I noticed.
9) How do you feel about the podcast delivery medium? What if there was low background music?
I don't think background music is needed.
10) Is there anything you’d like to add?
I watched a second time on a Video iPod, but as a movie rather than a podcast. The text size used is just right: I wouldn't use anything smaller. Audio quality was excellent.
Yes, my attention was kept focused on the issue.

Yes it does.
2) Is the topic well introduced? Is there prerequisite knowledge that is not addressed?
It is.
3) Would you like to see the topics sequenced differently? If so, how?
You lead the listener smoothly through the subject. There are no abrupt segues or jumps of topic.
4) How is the pace? Be specific.
The reading/speaking cadence is natural. Since the podcast medium allows the listener to jump around or revisit a section easily, it's not really an issue.
5) Are the component topics thoroughly explained? If not, which topics need more attention?
Yes.
6) Are any concepts explanations overly verbose or poorly done? If so, which ones and how could it be better?
7) Are new terms adequately defined?
I think so.
8) Are there any technical or grammatical errors?
When listening through headphones, the audio is off-balance to the left. I found this annoying at first, but got used to it. I would make sure that the channels are balanced equally in the future. One method would be to make the audio in a single channel (the mic is mono anyway), and then just copy it into the other channel.
Some audio filtering to kill any echo and/or background noise would be helpful.
9) How do you feel about the podcast delivery medium? What if there was low background music?
The graphics are very tiny on the Nano. But everyone knows the nano is a bit too small for enhanced podcasts, anyway. I also found that since my backlight is set to turn off after 10 seconds, that I was constantly touching the iPod to keep the light on for the graphics.
Music might work, but it would require some experimentation. You don't want your audience in a trance.
